Vehicle and mobile equipment maintenance can be extremely dangerous or fatal if the correct procedures or correct use of equipment is not adhered too. This type of machinery weighs in excess of 5 tonnes, an accident can quickly become catastrophic, understanding the dangers and ensuring the equipment is suspended and supported in a way that is certified and compliant is paramount. Following the correct maintenance procedures will ensure those working on the piece of equipment are safe and can complete their tasks, getting that machine back out into production.

Mandatory standard

The Consumer Goods (Vehicle Support Stands) Safety Standard 2017 sets out the mandatory requirements for the supply of vehicle support stands.

The mandatory standard is based on certain sections of the voluntary Australian Standard, AS 2538:2016 Vehicle Support Stands. Compliance with this standard ensures that the work stand you are using is designed, engineered and fabricated fit-for-purpose. It will have been tested to the minimum load factor of 3 and signed off as a piece of equipment that meets all performance requirements necessary for safe maintenance procedures.

Design and construction

Materials

Vehicle support stands must be free from blow holes, hard spots, shrinkage defects, cracks or other defects which would negatively affect the strength of the material.

Stability

Vehicle support stands must be geometrically designed to stand, and to resist tipping.

Finish

The surface of a vehicle support stand must be free from hazardous projections and sharp edges.

Testing

While the mandatory standard includes some features you can visually check, such as instructions for use and marking and packaging, it also specifies testing to ensure that vehicle support stands meet requirements for design, construction and performance.

Safety markings

Vehicle support stands must also be supplied with a range of information, including instructions for safe use, package marking and assembly instructions. A new warning notice must also be permanently marked on each vehicle support stand as follows:

Example of vehicle support stands safety label: "USE ONLY IN PAIRS AND ON FLAT HARD LEVEL SURFACES (e.g. CONCRETE), ENSURING THE STAND IS POSITIONED UNDER A SOLID PORTION OF THE VEHICLE AND THAT THE LOCKING MECHANISM IS FULLY ENGAGED."
