830E Komatsu Engine Bay Platforms Upgrade

An exercise in collaboration

Our CDEC Process of Consultation, Design, Engineering and Construction services was implemented for this project. See how the project turned out to be.

The Challenge

A major global coal producer located in the Rockhampton region of Queensland was using a substandard engine bay access platform with a stepladder attachment to access their Komatsu 830E truck.

The Consultation

The client approached Bend-tech with the issue they were having. As a result, a consultant from Bend-tech attended the mine site free of charge to look at the platforms and discuss solutions. It was decided that the platform would need a sliding gate and swing up the ladder to ensure greater safety, two things the original platform did not have.

The Design

Below are some of the initial designs drawn on site for the solution Bend-tech and the client were working towards. Following the site visit, 3d render drawings were done and sent to the client.

They then asked for the ladder design to be changed to a fixed top hinge with a 3 section top ladder and 2 section lower ladder that folded back onto the front deck so it was re-designed.

The Engineering

Following design approval from the client, this project was put into engineering. Bend-tech’s engineer tested the design to ensure the structural integrity was secure and that it met Australian standards. This was done using a finite element analysis which is a computerised method that predicts how a product reacts to physical forces such as vibration and heat. Following some slight modifications to ensure the design met the standards, this was put into construction.
